What does an appointment and treatment involve?

During the first appointment we assess the client’s complaint so as to make a diagnosis and determine a treatment plan.

The initial assessment involves taking a verbal history of what, according to the client, caused the complaint. We perform a physical examination on the affected part of the hand or upper limb in order to determine which tissues are injured and how the injury is affecting the ability of the client’s hand, wrist or elbow. The ability to resume the activities that are important for the client is the key factor for the treatment plan and for establishing the set of goals.

Treatment may involve:

  • Information, education and advice regarding the injury
  • Swelling (oedema) control, wound and scar management
  • Providing supports and splints for immobilization, protection, pain relief and function
  • Joint mobilisation and manipulation
  • Range of motion and stability exercises
  • Strengthening exercises
  • Desensitization exercises
  • Activity modification

Follow-up appointments involve re-assessment and treatment techniques as listed above.
